On The Mend & Back in Business

Finally, it seems, that we’re just about through with this bug. I hope so! When I’m not feeling well is also the time I am thinking about everthing that isn’t being done, and thinking of reorganizing something, like a closet in the bonus room (or the “catch all” room).
Kevin was the last one in the family to catch the nasty bug, so he’s still feeling all of it’s attributes. He did go to work today. As to whether or not he’ll come home early, is too soon to tell.
The kids, however, are well enough to do their schoolwork, go to youth group, and mingle in public with others. So that is how our week is starting IMG_3255

Happy Monday Everyone 🙂

Staying Close to Home

IMG_3222 We’re taking a “sick day” today. At least my son and I are. It’s a day to kick back, fill up on juice, cough syrup, and throat lozenges and watch our favorite movies.

For me, it’s a day to sit and think of all of the things that need to be done around the house that hinders resting. Thankfully, my husband is home to lend a hand with the chores, and be an extra pair of listening ears for our son (who is so sure that this bug will land us in the hospital everytime we sneeze).

I’m off to make another cup of tea!

The Novice Budgeter

This morning, I started a new plan with the boy.  We started a budget.
IMG_3204
Until now, whenever he has acquired money, he has wanted to go to the store right away and look for toys (namely, characters from the “CARS” movies). He’s old enough now that we felt that it was time that he should start choosing and buying gifts to give for birthdays/holidays, and to start setting aside some of that money, so that he can do so.

When I told him of my new idea, I think that he thought that I would be taking his money away because I heard, “It’s the end of the world” (he can get a bit dramatic). Well, maybe the end of the world where all of his money is earmarked for “CARS” toys.

So as the picture above shows, we are starting with 3 categories. Hopefully, it won’t be long before he sees the benefits of budgeting that money.

Now, we just have to convince him that when he’s offered a paying job (that he’s capable of doing), that he should take it.

Merry Christmas!

As far as I know, we are as ready for Christmas as we’ll ever be!The presents have been made or purchased, wrapped and either placed under the tree or mailed to our out-of-state sisters and their families.  Stocking stuffers are ready.  I even have little gifts for the cats (catnip toys, so really, it’s entertainment for us).
I did discover later this afternoon, that a toy for my son’s present, didn’t make it into the box with the rest of his items for that gift.  So I’ll need to unwrap, the package, add the toy and re-wrap it.

The kids are excited for tomorrow.  My son, at one point was leaping through the house like a little kid because he was so happy.  My son is now 5′ 11″.   He’s a tall, happy elf!  My daughter is better and containing her excitement.  She’s more curious about trying to figure out what is in the packages under the tree.

This afternoon, I was told to stay upstairs so that my husband could help my son wrap my gift.  All that my son has told me is that my gift is “governmentally secret”, which makes me wonder what he bought.

As per our tradition for Christmas Eve, we buy a pizza for dinner, and watch a movie.  This year, we’re watching “The Amazing Spiderman”.   I used to buy a new game for the kids to open as well, however my son is not really into games.  He may go one round before he’s done.   Since the table is free of game pieces, I’ll probably get out a puzzle as that is what my aunt and I used to do on Christmas Eve.

As I’m typing this, I can hear “Seinfeld” playing in the DVD player.  I think it’s the episode that introduces “Festivus”.  I hope that no one actually wants to air their grievances tonight :).   I should check to see if we have an aluminium pole.

Tomorrow, we have cinnamon rolls, via Pillsbury, and then drive south to share dinner with my dad and grandma.

Until my next post, Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year, from my house to yours!

Thankful

All during the month of November, several of my friends and family on Facebook have posted something that they are thankful for every day.   I haven’t done that.  I’m thankful for many things and many people, however, when it comes to Facebook lately, I don’t feel like participating in latest phase/game.  I might feel differently next year.

On this rainy day, however, I will list a few things that I’m thankful for.

I am thankful to have a home to live in, so that on days where the weather is extremely wet and windy, my family and I are warm and dry (and that my kids have hot cocoa mix for days like this).

I’m sure that my husband was very thankful to have taken the car today, thus saving him from getting drenched at the bus stop.

I’m thankful that the weatherman said that tomorrow is supposed to be dry, so driving to my dad’s house shouldn’t be as hazardous tomorrow (and I’m thankful to have family to spend the holidays with).

Happy Thanksgiving!

Halloween In A New Neighborhood

During the past few days, we prepared for Halloween.  We don’t dress up or trick-or-treat, however, we plan for those who do.

On Sunday, I took the kids to the store to buy their pumpkins.  It was too rainy to go to the pumpkin patch (and my daughter informed me that it didn’t bother her to not go to a dirty field).

On Monday, we carved!

This one is mine.  Heather told me that it reminded her the “Annoying Orange”.   So I guess this is the “Annoying Pumpkin”!  It just needs teeth and a hidden soundbox that says “BLAH, BLAH, BLAH” everytime someone walks up to our door.  That might be scarier than the normal Halloween sounds!

Heather, being the “Hunger Games” fan this year, chose to carve the “Mockingjay”, freehand

Kylin chose to carve out “EVE” from the movie “WALL-E”, also freehand.

Kevin went for a fairly traditional look this year, sort of.

So with our pumpkins carved, and the candy bought, we were ready for last night.

For breakfast, we ate pumpkin pancakes……..

By evening, the pumpkins were on the porch with Coleman glo-sticks  inside…

Candy posted by the door (non-chocolate, so that the leftovers don’t tempt me so strongly)

The front porch is lit and non-scary (and we fully intend to have enough lights and leaves to surround the whole front door next year).

No one from our neighborhood came.  Later in the evening, a friend brought his children over and they were given a generous amount of candy.  We apologize for any sugar high that he may have had to deal with on the way home!

Feeling Tall (sort of)

Yesterday started off really well.  In spite of having to get up early, shower and leave before Kevin even left for work. I had a doctor appointment this morning.   One of the routine things they do, is to check weight and height.   It appears, that I’m half of an inch taller than I’ve been for the last 32 years.  Usually as a person ages, they get shorter.   So either I grew or I’ve been totally wrong about my height since I stopped growing at 12.  My daughter pointed out to me, “Your license is now correct”.

I also wound up getting a booster shot for Diphtheria, Tetanus and Pertussis.    After  several visits to the hospital, and the need for an IV almost every time, I still had that nervous feeling in my stomach over vaccination needle in my arm.  The last time that I remember getting a vaccine, was when I was 10, and I was in the school cafeteria with several other children.  When the needle went into my arm then, I howled and it echoed throughout the room. Yesterday, I was surprised that I barely felt it.   I also remembered a time, about 4 years ago when I took my son to the doctor for his vaccination.   As the nurse swabbed his arm with alcohol for the shot, she told him, “Now this isn’t the kind of alcohol that you drink.” to which we responded with, “Oh, so it’s good liquor!”.

Yesterday, the nurse informed me that my shoulder might be sore from the vaccination.  Today, she is right.  However, I won’t need to have that done for another 10 years.

The rest of the day involved the sport of bill-paying, however, that isn’t nearly as interesting or fun.  It does feel good to know that we can still drive our car, live in our house, have electricity, gas and water for another month.

Anyway, enough randomness

I wonder what the neighbors think about the noise in our back yard?

Nothing to see here.  Just a young man with his CARS collection.

“Mom, why are you still here?  I’m playing”

The Rain Has Arrived

Finally, it’s feeling like Fall, and we’re experiencing the weather that Oregon is known for.   The rain has come.   Last night, we finally had a downpour, which I like to listen to as the rain lands on our roof.  It makes me want to curl up on the couch with some tea and either watch a movie or read a good book.  When I go to bed, it lulls me to sleep.

For Oscar, the rain provides him with more places to get a drink.
